How to read the data

Method and limits

What we counted. Each row in the main CSV is a supplier–country/region pair, with an official PDF URL and page reference. We keep source supplier names and deduplicate them within each list. The FY2023 table has 187 suppliers and 470 pairs; the 2014 table has 188 suppliers and 378 pairs. Country counts are distinct suppliers listing a location in the country. Shares use that list’s supplier count as the denominator.

Coverage is selective. Apple says the FY2023 list covers 98.0% of direct spend; the 2014 list covers at least 97.0% of procurement spend. These are spending coverage statements, not the shares shown in our chart. Neither list is a supplier census. Absence from a list does not mean a company never supplied Apple.

Location detail differs. The 2014 source gives detailed addresses; FY2023 mixes states, provinces and cities and may include manufacturing support locations. We reduce these to country/region pairs. Counts do not measure sites, production, purchasing value or product coverage.

Names and geography. We do not match aliases, parent companies or acquisitions across years. We standardize USA to United States, Korea to South Korea and China to China mainland. Puerto Rico is grouped with United States in both lists; Taiwan remains separate from China mainland. Country/region labels are analytical categories and do not express a position on sovereignty.

Overlap, not a timeline. A supplier can list multiple countries. The overlap figures count suppliers whose country sets include both Vietnam and China mainland, or both India and China mainland, in FY2023. We do not interpolate between the two lists or infer changes for a fixed group of companies.

Extraction checks. Two independent extraction methods agreed on the FY2023 supplier names and country pairs. The 2014 extraction was checked against the source’s supplier columns, including the headquarters-only section. Selected long entries and page boundaries were visually checked; every address was not manually transcribed and checked word for word.

Reproduce the figures. Filter the pairs CSV by coverage_year, deduplicate supplier names for the denominator, and group by country_region for country counts. For overlap, group each supplier’s country set and check for both labels; for multi-country coverage, count sets with more than one label. Source page numbers refer to PDF page order. Page anchors depend on your PDF reader; retrieved_utc is the retrieval time, not Apple’s publication date.

Limits on use. The tables contain no finished-product models, capacity, spending amounts or employee counts. They cannot identify the suppliers or origin of a particular iPhone model. This is an independent SuppliersMap compilation, not an Apple publication.
