Xbox Series X: selected board evidence

Sources reviewed:

Eleven selected records from iFixit's November 2020 teardown of the original Xbox Series X: the 1TB console with a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Sales region, retail SKU, model number, production batch and board revision are unstated. Microsoft's Xbox Wire specification supplies the AMD processor context. This selection excludes Xbox Series S, the 1TB all-digital and 2TB Galaxy Black editions, the X25 edition and later revised boards.

  • A custom AMD processor is not a foundry answer

Microsoft describes a custom system on a chip built with long-time partner AMD, with eight Zen 2 CPU cores and a 52-CU RDNA 2 GPU, and iFixit reads the Project Scarlett 100-000000388 marking on the board. That answers the processor-design question. It does not identify the fabrication plant, packaging contractor or console assembler, and a chip vendor's headquarters cannot fill those links.

    Sources: [3][1]

  • 16GB GDDR6 is shared memory, not an SSD

Microsoft specifies 16GB of GDDR6 on a 320-bit bus, split into a faster 10GB pool and a 6GB pool. iFixit identifies Micron D9WCW 1GB and D9WZX 2GB packages adding up to that total. That memory is working space for the CPU and GPU; the separate 1TB SSD stores games and Quick Resume states. Do not treat one capacity as the other.

    Sources: [4][3][1]

  • The SSD maker, NAND and controller are separate records

iFixit found a replaceable M.2 2230 NVMe drive it describes as a custom Western Digital SN530, then read SanDisk markings on its NAND package and controller. The drive assembly, flash memory and controller are related but distinct roles. A standard form factor also does not make the drive user-upgradeable: iFixit notes partitioning and software barriers.

    Sources: [1][2]

Limitations (5)

  • Unconfirmed and omitted: iFixit says the Microsoft MS0DDDSP03 is “probably” the optical-drive controller, calls a CT08E part “possibly” a Challenge Electronics transducer, and suggests drive-to-motherboard pairing from its own tests. These tentative findings are not promoted to records.
  • One examined console does not establish exclusive supply or the parts in every region, revision and production batch. AMD's processor design and the physical chip identification are different claims; Microsoft states a 7nm-class process but names no foundry here.
  • Foundry, packaging contractor, final assembler, power-supply maker, optical-drive assembler, fan and heatsink suppliers and all component factories remain unassigned. Company headquarters are not factories.
  • Western Digital is credited with the SN530 drive, while iFixit reads SanDisk markings on its NAND and controller. In 2020 SanDisk was a Western Digital brand; the brand names are reported as marked, not as separate purchasing relationships.
  • Further iFixit identifications (Texas Instruments, Richtek, Nuvoton, Qorvo and ON Semiconductor regulator, comparator and audio parts) are outside this selection. English summaries and the diagram are original; no teardown photographs or complete BOM are reproduced. Other locales disclose English fallback.

Microsoft Xbox Series X supplier FAQ

6 questions about this supply chain, answered from the records above.

Which processor does Xbox Series X use?

Microsoft specifies a custom AMD system on a chip with an 8-core Zen 2 CPU and a 52-CU RDNA 2 GPU; iFixit identifies the Project Scarlett 100-000000388 package on the board. This supports the design role, not a foundry or assembly-site assignment. See sources [1] and [3].

Who makes the Xbox Series X memory?

In the examined console iFixit identifies Micron D9WCW (1GB) and D9WZX (2GB) GDDR6 packages totalling 16GB. Other production batches may differ. See sources [1] and [4].

Who makes the Xbox Series X SSD?

iFixit identifies a custom 1TB Western Digital SN530 in the M.2 2230 format, with SanDisk-marked NAND and controller. That is one 2020 1TB disc console, not the 2TB edition or every batch. See sources [1] and [2].

Does this cover the all-digital or 2TB Xbox Series X?

No. The teardown unit is the original 2020 1TB console with a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Its sales region and board revision are unstated, and newer editions are not inferred from it.

Which findings are unconfirmed?

iFixit's tentative MS0DDDSP03 optical-drive-controller role, a possible Challenge Electronics transducer and the drive-pairing theory are labeled Unconfirmed in the limitations and are not records. See source [1].

Is this Microsoft's complete supplier list?

No. It is an eleven-record selection across nine organizations. Foundry, assembler, power-supply, fan and factory relationships are not filled in, and no exclusive sourcing or market share is implied.
